Teams

Nov 14, 2008 6:00 PM, by Justin Holmgren

Team selection was based on test performance, member profile information and logistics. Although many people excelled in some particular subject, in addition to scores we needed to consider logistics in order to create a balanced team to cover all of the events.

Events in parentheses are engineering events which will be pre-built or pre-designed and only require operation during the competition.

Test Descriptions

Oct 27, 2008 9:42 PM, by Justin Holmgren

Here is the list of topics to study and the schedule for testing from 11/3 to 11/7. Both Thursday and Friday are available to make up tests, so if you can't come on the specified day, please email us with which test you need to take and when you want to take it. The parenthetical numbers are how many people signed up for the test on their member profiles.

Locations will be announced soon (probably MRC or library)

BIOLOGY (Mon 3:15)
Cell Biology (22) Signal transduction and membranes.
Disease Detectives (13) Study guide
Ecology (12) Grasslands
Health Science (12) Skeletal System
Herpetology (9) General characteristics of reptiles and amphibians and major recognition traits

All the biology events will be combined into an hour long test, but you only need to answer the questions in the subsection pertaining to the events you've signed up for. Additional material may appear on the tests, but these will be the main topics.

CHEM/PHYS (Tue 3:30)
Environmental Chemistry (9)
Chemistry Lab (14)
Forensics (12)
Physics Lab (12)

See the linked event descriptions. If you're taking all of these tests and there's not enough time, please arrange to take some tests on a makeup day.

STUDY/OTHER (Wed 3:15)
All tests should take approximately 20 minutes, but 30 minutes maximum will be allotted per section. :)

Astronomy (10) H-R diagrams, stellar evolution, Kepler's 3rd law
Permitted resources:
-one standard (SAT-acceptable) calculator
-one 3x5 note card

Dynamic Planet (11) plate tectonics
Permitted resource:
-one 3x5 note card

Fossils (9) formation and alteration of fossils, plantae: Acer, Annularia, Calamites, Lepidodendron, Metasequoia, Ginko, Stromatolites
Permitted resource:
-one 3x5 note card

Remote Sensing (5) satellite imaging and interpretation
Permitted resource:
-one 3x5 note card

Experimental Design (7)
-Scoring rubric: http://www.palyscioly.org/files/53
-Look up "torsional pendulum"

Picture This (8) Reviewing textbook glossaries might be helpful.

MAKE UP DAYS (Thurs, Fri 3:15)
Please let us know by Tuesday 11/4 if you need to take tests on either of these days.

Registration has begun for the WonderCup Challenge! This Bay Area science competition, new to Paly SciOly, is for teams of four students (two boys and two girls, at least one junior, and at least one sophomore). Questions range in difficulty from SAT II to AP level, focusing on biology, chemistry, physics, and related fields of inquiry. The first round is 30 minutes online; the second and third rounds are at Stanford.

Please contact Erika, Justin, and Sasha to participate! If you are planning on forming your own team, please submit your roster by Friday, October 3, 11:59 PM. After that time, we will form teams from the remaining students as possible.

Team Advisors

Aug 31, 2008 11:10 AM, by Erika Ji

Please welcome Mr. Shawn Leonard and Ms. Qinzi Ji to Paly SciOly! Mr. Leonard and Ms. Ji have both assisted the Paly SciOly team in the past, and they will be advising the Paly SciOly team together with Ms. Carolyn Csongradi, who has been the advisor for SciOly for four years.

Advisors are essential to our team - their experience, dedication, and hard work make everything possible. We look forward to working with Ms. Csongradi, Mr. Leonard, and Ms. Ji this year!
